Frequently Asked Questions

Creates a miniature model look by blurring parts of the image while keeping a focus strip sharp.

Yes, adjust position, angle and blur strength.

Cityscapes, landscapes and scenes with clear depth work best.
How It Works

The Tilt Shift tool uses the HTML5 Canvas API with stackBlur or gaussianBlur algorithms to simulate a miniature model (tilt-shift) effect. The tool creates a graduated blur that keeps a horizontal or diagonal strip in focus while blurring the top and bottom regions.

The effect is achieved through: (1) Defining a focus strip at a specified angle and position. (2) Creating a gradient alpha mask that transitions from fully blurred (alpha=0) to fully sharp (alpha=1) and back to fully blurred. (3) Applying increasing blur radius as pixels move away from the focus strip center. (4) Compositing the blurred and sharp versions using the gradient mask.

The blur is applied using a multi-pass box blur (fast approximation of Gaussian blur) where each pass increases the effective blur radius. The number of blur passes determines the maximum blur intensity. The focus strip position, angle, and blur strength are all configurable for creative control.

Tips & Best Practices
  • High-angle shots work best: Tilt-shift effect is most convincing on aerial or high-vantage-point photos looking down at scenes.
  • Strong blur (70-100%) creates the most dramatic miniature effect — subtle blur looks more like shallow depth of field.
  • Focus on the subject: Place the focus strip directly on your main subject to draw viewer attention naturally.
  • Match the angle: Align the focus strip with the natural depth axis of the scene for the most realistic effect.
  • Saturated colors help: Tilt-shift works best on colorful scenes (toys, buildings, vehicles) that look like model dioramas.
  • Combine with high saturation: Boost color saturation after tilt-shift to enhance the miniature model illusion.
Use Cases

Travel photographers turning cityscapes and landscapes into miniature model-like images for unique, eye-catching social media content.

Real estate photographers creating artistic tilt-shift effects on property exterior photos for distinctive marketing materials. Urban photographers transforming busy intersections and city blocks into miniature-looking dioramas. Event photographers applying tilt-shift to venue overview shots for artistic event documentation. Social media creators making everyday scenes look like toy models for viral, attention-grabbing posts.
